State Dept: Offer Visas to LGBT Ugandans

OCT 2010

Last week a Ugandan newspaper published a list of the “Top 100 Homosexuals” which included their full names, pictures, and addresses and called for their hanging. Since the list was released, there have been a number of personal attacks and property damage towards some of the listed individuals.

One year ago, a Ugandan parliamentarian introduced an “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” that if passed, would impose the death penalty on LGBT HIV-positive citizens found to be having sex. The bill also would impose life imprisonment for other LGBT Ugandans found to be sexually active.  This bill is an example of the blatant homophobia Ugandans face every day in their homeland. And if this weren’t enough, it justgot worse.

Earlier this month a Ugandan newspaper published a list of the “Top 100 Homosexuals” which included their full names, pictures, and addresses and called for their hanging. Since the list was released, there have been a number of personal attacks and property damage towards some of the listed individuals. One can only imagine what may happen next.

Death penalty for gays will be law soon, Ugandan lawmaker says

October 28th, 2010

The Ugandan cabinet member who introduced a bill last year that would see gays executed in some circumstances says the bill will become law.

David Bahati, Uganda’s minister for ethics, told CNN he believes the bill will become law “soon.”

“We are very confident,” he said, “because this is a piece of legislation that is needed in this country to protect the traditional family here in Africa, and also protect the future of our children.”

Bahati and his boss, Ugandan President Yoweri Kugata Museveni, are reportedly members of the American Christian group The Fellowship, also known as The Family.

Six Reasons Why Americans Should Care About What is Happening in Uganda …and its not only about protecting the rights of gay Ugandans whose lives may be in jeopardy.

Oct 14, 2010

A May 2010 Vanguard documentary, ‘Missionaries of Hate, shows the impact of a conference in Uganda featuring Scott Lively and the “kill the gays” bill proposed in their Parliament, but it took more than one conference to demonize Uganda’s gay population.  For years there has been a multi-faceted effort by western politicians and evangelists to promote a politicized Christianity in Uganda.  Jeff Sharlet exposed the role of The Family in his book by the same name and his newly released ‘C Street House’.

Kapya Kaoma produced a report on western evangelical involvement in Uganda in ‘The Public Eye’. Charismatic evangelicals, now organized under the authority of apostles, have declared Uganda as a prototype in ‘Transformation’ movies. The situation for gay Ugandans is dire, but for the groups who have helped to bring this about, Uganda is a prototype to be replicated in countries around the globe.  Following are six reasons why we should be paying more attention.

Globalizing the Culture Wars: U.S. Conservatives, African Churches, and Homophobia

2009

Groundbreaking PRA Investigation Exposes Influence of U.S. Religious Conservatives in Promoting Homophobia in Africa.

U.S. Christian Right also mobilizes African clerics in U.S. “culture war” over ordination of LGBT clergy

Sexual minorities in Africa have become collateral damage to our domestic conflicts and culture wars as U.S. conservative evangelicals and those opposing gay pastors and bishops within mainline Protestant denominations woo Africans in their American fight, a groundbreaking investigation by Political Research Associates (PRA) has discovered.

Globalizing the Culture Wars: U.S. Conservatives, African Churches, and Homophobia‘ (PDF) , a new report by the Rev. Kapya Kaoma, PRA Project Director, exposes the U.S. Right’s promotion of an agenda in Africa that aims to criminalize homosexuality and otherwise infringe upon the human rights of LGBT people while also mobilizing African clerics in U.S. culture war battles. U.S. social conservatives, who are in the minority in mainline churches, depend on African religious leaders to legitimize their positions as their growing numbers makes African Christians more influential globally.

The investigation’s release could not be timelier, as the Ugandan parliament considers the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009. Language in that bill echoes the false and malicious charges made in Uganda by U.S antigay activist and Holocaust revisionist Scott Lively that western gays are conspiring to take over Uganda and even the world.

    1. Then why don’t normal Christians come out and confront these extremists, like they always expect Muslims to do? But as we all know, most Christians think Muslims are terrorists and the USA in a Christian Nation. This proves to me they are in need of extermination. These folks are the REAL Christians. Read the bible, it instructs them to kill non-Christians.
