Trial Courts Don’t Know History, Why Expect Anyone Else?

Excerpt #1 “….insertion of the phrase “under God” was merely a reference to historical and religious traditions.” [Source:]

FACT is “Under God” was put into the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ because those in power in the USA wanted the phrase to be used to ward off Communism: “In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words “under God,” creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy’s daughter objected to this alteration.” … (“The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth’s Companion on September 8, 1892.”) [Source:]

Excerpt #2: Geoffrey Bok, attorney for the defendants. “It’s the founding thing upon which our country was founded. Our rights did not come from the king or the tsar or the queen. They come from something higher.” [Source:]

FACT one only need read a statement by none other than John Adams, to understand that no religion or God were consoled when creating this country:

“It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven, more than those at work upon ships or houses, or laboring in merchandise or agriculture; it will forever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses.”

~John Adams, “A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America” 1787-1788

Massachusetts High Court Hears State Constitutional Challenge To Pledge

On Sept. 4, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial court heard oral arguments (video of full arguments) in Doe v. Acton-Boxborough Regional School District. The suit was brought by an atheist-humanist family challenging the constitutionality of the daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in Massachusetts schools. (No student who objects is required to recite the pledge.) The trial court rejected a challenge under the Massachusetts state constitution to the practice, holding that insertion of the phrase “under God” was merely a reference to historical and religious traditions. (See prior posting.) Religious News Service (RNS) describes the 35 minute oral argument, at USA Today News
