Recent revelations about how the National Security Agency (NSA) spied on millions of Americans immediately raised grave public concerns. As President Obama sought to clarify the nature of government surveillance in the months since, the extent of the administration’s disregard of the law has become clear.
In a press conference last month, President Obama outlined a four-step process to restore public confidence in government surveillance programs, including the appointment of a board of “outside experts” to provide oversight.
Unfortunately, the president selected a group of loyalists unlikely to challenge the scope of the program. It’s just the most recent sign President Obama has resurrected the Bush-Cheney administration’s view of a unitary executive unaccountable to Congress or the courts.
