Say No to Ray Kelly for DHS Secretary
A federal judge in New York just ruled that Stop and Frisk – NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly’s signature program – violates the 4th and 14th amendments to the Constitution. (1)
So, why is the president still even considering him for a promotion?
With Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano leaving at the end of the month, we expect the White House won’t leave the post vacant for much longer. Ray Kelly is the clear Beltway favorite and the president himself has stopped just short of nominating him, telling the press he would be “perfect” for the job.
Ray Kelly would be a perfect Homeland Security Secretary much the same way that the Joker would make a perfect head of Arkham Asylum. It’s up to us tell the Senate committee members charged with confirming the next secretary of Homeland Security that Ray Kelly and his history of racist and unconstitutional law enforcement is not fit for the job.
Can you call members of the Senate Homeland Security & Government Affairs Committee and tell them you oppose Ray Kelly for the next DHS secretary?
After President Obama first floated his name, more than 6,000 activists signed our petition opposing Kelly for DHS secretary. In most cases, it would make sense to first wait and see who the President nominates for the position. But with the stakes this high, we need to continue to get out in front of this nomination.
Elevating Kelly to Homeland Security would be a de facto endorsement of his discriminatory and unconstitutional law enforcement tactics and would give him the power and budget to expand on these tactics and bring his troubling police philosophy to the national stage.
In light of all the recent reports of abuses by the national security state, the last thing we need is a DHS secretary who has openly embraced the destruction of civil liberties as necessary to achieving “public safety”.
Please join us in calling members of Senate Homeland Security Committee and letting them know Ray Kelly would be wrong for the DHS:
Thanks in advance for your help.
