Santorum’s Message To People Who Can’t Afford Health Care Costs: Lower Your Cell Phone Bill: “…a woman the other day who came up and complained to me that she has to pay $200 a month for her prescriptions…I said, in other words, this $200 a month keeps you alive, she goes yes. I said, and you’re complaining that you’re paying $200 a month and it keeps you alive? What’s your cable bill? GOP Presidential Candidate Michele Bachmann “Yet while (Michelle) Bachmann has been a fierce and persistent critic of “Washington’s spending addiction,” she has, like other members of Congress, shown that the home district is not the favorite place to practice fiscal conservatism. In the previous year she had sent several letters to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood seeking stimulus funding for transportation projects in her district through Transportation Investment-Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants. And in her letter in support of a $300 million request for a new bridge to “dramatically improve accessibility to the downtown Stillwater retail district,” Bachmann cited a Minnesota Department of Transportation estimate that the project would create “a total of 2,970 jobs each year after the project is completed.”

“Today, the answer seems both more modest and more challenging: if we want to reduce poverty, we have to stop doing the things that make people poor and keep them that way. Stop underpaying people for the jobs they do. Stop treating working people as potential criminals and let them have the right to organize for better wages and working conditions.” ~ Barbara Ehrenreich

Nebraska GOP Sen Candidate Compares Welfare Recipients To Scavenging Raccoons: In a speech this week, Nebraska AG Jon Bruning (R) compared welfare recipients to scavenging animals, suggesting the state is making it too “easy” for them. “The raccoons — they’re not stupid, they’re gonna do the easy way if we make it easy for them. Just like welfare recipients all across America,” said Bruning, who is running for Sen. Ben Nelson’s (D-NE) seat. “If we don’t send them to work, they’re gonna take the easy route.”
