“I have concluded that any system sustained by hatred, any theology that acts with deliberate cruelty to others and laughs at the suffering it causes, any ideology that marginalizes a group of people based on whom they choose to love is morally bankrupt and I reject it.”
— Nate Phelps, the atheist son of the Reverend Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church, GOD HATES FAGS, Christians
Anti-Gay Evangelist Scott Lively Hires a Convicted Sex Offender
Notorious anti-gay political activist Rev. Scott Lively recently opened a coffee shop called “Holy Grounds” across the street from a high school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The shop requests a “donation” for coffee and tea, which basically meant it was free to the kids. The purpose was, after all, low key evangelization. But the Springfield Republican newspaper reports on its front page today that the shop manager has been arrested for failing to register as a convicted sex offender. Continue reading
Obama’s Cuba policy benefits religion at expense of secular groups
“Mr. PrThe Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a vigorous rebuke to President Barack Obama via letter today, protesting his unprecedented recent decision (White House Blog, Jan. 14, 2011) to single out “religious proselytizing organizations for preferential treatment and travel privileges to Cuba.”
The national state/church watchdog, with more than 16,000 nonreligious members, says the new federal administrative regulations discriminate on the basis of religious belief, “penalizing atheist or other freethought groups in the United States because we are not accorded the same privilege or benefit as religious groups.”
The stated purposes of the announced changes include to “increase people-to-people contact; support civil society in Cuba, enhance the free flow of information to, from and among the Cuban people; and help promote their independence from Cuban authorities.” (Italics added.)
FFRF charged the order creates the “free flow of religion rather than information” to Cuba. More
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel detailed some apparently flagrant abuse of tax-exempt status by organizations claiming to be churches in Milwaukee:
In a front-page story March 6, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel detailed some apparently flagrant abuse of tax-exempt status by organizations claiming to be churches in Milwaukee. The story estimated that the average homeowner has to pay 20 percent in taxes — an additional $800 a year — to make up for the exemptions. (A sidebar on churches that rent out space to nonexempt businesses but don’t pay tax on the income is here.
The Journal Sentinel identified nearly $500,000 worth of properties with “suspicious exemptions” from a random examination of “just a few cases from 2010 in Milwaukee.” The paper charged that Milwaukee has not been compiling exemption data and filing mandatory reports with the state Department of Revenue since 2007. Budget proposal would open voucher floodgates, destroy common schools:
The Freedom From Religion Foundation today blasted the budget proposal by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to eliminate the enrollment cap and the low-income requirement for participation in the Milwaukee voucher program.
FFRF charged that Walker’s voucher scheme could ultimately destroy public education in Wisconsin. Walker’s proposed state budget has ignited unprecedented daily protests at the Wisconsin State Capitol by many, including teacher unions protesting his proposal to eliminate collective bargaining. But with Walker’s voucher proposal, the other shoe has dropped.
“If enacted, Walker’s voucher proposals would ultimately destroy the dream of our common schools — secular public education in Wisconsin,” said Annie Laurie Gaylor, who, with Dan Barker, co-directs the national state/church watchdog, based in Madison, Wis.
