Pfizer Exposed on Wikileaks Revelations

Dec. 9, 2010 Pfizer squirms on Wikileaks revelations as Wikileaks latest release reveals Pfizer investigated a Nigerian attorney general who was on a legal case against Pfizer.  The drug company was found to have used dirty tricks and conducted an illegal drug trial on Nigerian children.

The bombshell released on cables from US diplomats through Wikileaks ago is hitting the internet including Twitter, Facebook on the information that the US giant drug maker:

1) Pfizer hired investigators to find evidence of corruption against an attorney general who was proceeding with the case against Pfizer.  The plan was to get evidence and convince the prosecutor to drop the case brought on by the Nigerian government.

2) Pfizer conducted an illegal drug trial on Nigerian children in 1996 to test a meningitis drug called Trovan. The drug which killed 11 children and left many permanently disabled then sparked a law suit and the two cases against Pfizer was for 6 billion dollars in damages.

3) The drugmaker was accused of misleading parents of the sick children with meningitis with an experimental drug which was given to 200 children. The drug Trovan proved fatal in 11 cases and damaged dozens of other children the total of which is unknown.

4) Pfizer failed to follow the proper channels and obtain proper regulatory approval for the drug trials.

Later, Pfizer signed a fraction of the full amount of the lawsuit which was only a 75 million dollar settlement on July 30th and the details are sketchy but they do involve the US Embassy.




May 2006 – Pfizer Illegally Tested Unapproved Drug On Children In Nigeria: “During an epidemic in Nigeria in 1996, Pfizer illegally tested an unapproved drug on children with brain infections, says a panel of Nigerian medical experts. According to the report, published in the Sunday (today) edition of the Washington Post, this violated international law. The report was completed five years ago, but never came out in the open.”

May 2007 – Drugs giant faces criminal charges over clinical trial: “The US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has been slapped with criminal charges in Nigeria over a notorious clinical trial it conducted on children during a meningitis epidemic a decade ago. Patients became unwitting guinea pigs for a new, untested antibiotic and many of them either died or were left with permanent disabilities.”

Nov 26, 2008 – Pfizer Implicated in Human Drug Experimentation on Critically Ill Children in Nigeria: “Did Pfizer recruit critical ill Nigerian children for illegal drug experiments? That’s what the Nigerian government is charging in an $8.5 billion lawsuit against the drug maker. To avoid a court battle, Pfizer is offering to pay off the Nigerian government with $150 million in drug money, hoping it will drop the case and end what could potentially be a public relations nightmare for the drug maker. December 2008 – Poisoned medicine kills dozens of children in Nigeria: “The bottle had been contaminated with a toxic chemical called diethylene glycol. More than 30 Nigerian children are thought to have died recently after taking the medicine.”

January 2009 – Nigerian families can sue the Pfizer drugs giant in the US over its alleged role in the deaths of children, a US appeals court has ruled: “The decision overturns a ruling by a lower court that the case must be heard in Nigeria.  Pfizer is accused of killing 11 children and injuring 181 others when an antibiotic was tested on them during a meningitis epidemic in 1996.  Pfizer denies the claims, saying they were victims of the outbreak.  The epidemic killed 12,000 children in Nigeria in six months.”

February 16, 2009Nigerian Children Killed by Contaminated Teething Medicine: “A toxic chemical mixed into a teething medicine for babies has killed at least 84 children in Nigeria as of February 16, 2009. The children died after taking My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture, a syrup for teething pain, according to Nigeria’s Health Ministry. Health officials said that a batch of the medicine that went on in November contained diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent and an ingredient in antifreeze and brake fluid.”
