America’s Escape from Knowing – Unlike Germans who confronted their dark past, many Americans prefer to overlook the crimes of history

America’s Escape from Knowing

By Phil Rockstroh, March 28, 2011

Editor’s Note: For many of us, one of the regrets about dying is that we don’t get to see how things turn out. We must face the fact that we are allowed to view, personally, only a brief chapter of the human narrative. Through our imperfect knowledge of history, we can gaze back through the haze of time at how we as a people (or as a family) got here, but the future is the ultimate unknown.

That is the human condition – a mix of hope, awareness, regret and sometimes willful ignorance – a paradox that Phil Rockstroh confronts in this guest essay, which he dedicates to the memory of “my brave friend and gifted colleague, Joe Bageant, 1946-2011.”

In Berlin, Germany, in early 1939, at Friedrichstrasse railway station, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, my grandmother placed my mother and her older sister, with a few family valuables sown into their clothing, on a Kindertransport bound for Great Britain.

,…,

My mother escaped Nazi Germany; my father was orphaned on an Indian res., left starving, on the doorstep of a church, during the Great Depression. My earliest memories involve the Civil Rights struggles roiling my native Birmingham, Alabama.

Then came the Vietnam War, Nixon, and Watergate. Next, arrived the backlash, in the form of Reaganism that since has diminished and degraded the nation.

Accordingly, I’ve never held any illusion that this world was not seeded with the potential of man-made tumult, stupidity, and tragedy.

A Two-Decade Detour into Empire

By Robert Parry (A Special Report)
March 31, 2011

Twenty years ago, in spring 1991, the United States was at a crossroads that would decide the near-term fate of American democracy, but that reality wasn’t apparent to many. What was clear was that the U.S. empire was resurgent.

President George H.W. Bush had just won a smashing victory in the Persian Gulf War, restoring popular support for a militaristic global agenda. The Gulf War had capped a decade of Ronald Reagan and Bush reconstructing the national consensus for foreign wars that had been shattered in the 1970s by Vietnam, the Pentagon Papers and Watergate.

Celebrating this domestic side of his military victory, Bush declared on Feb. 28, 1991, “We’ve kicked the Vietnam Syndrome once and for all.”

Reagan and Bush had achieved this success by rebuilding the walls of government secrecy and defending them with new weapons of propaganda and with an elite palace guard of national security intellectuals, known as the neoconservatives.

Outside the empire’s walls – and in retreat – were Americans who believed in a democratic republic, a system of governance that depended on a well-informed electorate and disagreed with the imperial goals of open-ended U.S. military dominance of the world.

These Americans had been on the defensive for most of the 1980s, except for a brief rally during the Iran-Contra scandal, when they managed to strip away some of the lies and deceptions that were concealing the secret foreign policy of the United States.

But the Iran-Contra offensive had fallen short. The Reagan-Bush defenders proved to be both well-entrenched and adept at counterattack. There also was a serious lack of will among most of the officials entrusted with the Iran-Contra banner. They had happily settled for a few minor concessions.

So, when the Iran-Contra smoke cleared, the imperial forces had lost of a few fighters and had surrendered some ground, but – on balance – were even stronger. The most important secrets had been protected and those who had aggressively pushed the Iran-Contra attack had been bloodied, too.

Then, in February 1991, President Bush crowned the imperial comeback with a militarily unnecessary ground war driving Iraqi troops from Kuwait during 100 hours of carnage that thrilled Americans as they watched green-tinted images of Iraqi tanks and other targets getting blown to bits. “War”, the meaning of the word, is simply useless

March 31, 2011

“War”, the meaning of the word, is simply useless. The US has and always will be at war with someone. The use of the word “humanitarian” is often used, yet most know this is a guise for globalization….more accurately terrorism:

A BRIEFING ON THE HISTORY OF U.S. MILITARY INTERVENTIONS
Since the September 11 attacks on the United States, most people in the world agree that the perpetrators need to be brought to justice, without killing many thousands of civilians in the process. But unfortunately, the U.S. military has always accepted massive civilian deaths as part of the cost of war. The military is now poised to kill thousands of foreign civilians, in order to prove that killing U.S. civilians is wrong.

Presidential Hopeful Blamed Abortion for Suppossed Social Security Problems

March 31, 2011

Only the elimination of all conservative Christians will allow all Americans to be free and the world to no longer have to live in fear of the U.S.A.’s imperialist, terrorist holy war.

The conservative ideology has never helped mankind in any way, it has not only never helped mankind in anyway, it has oppressed, murdered, raped and killed all those in it’s way to gain power.

History shows us this.

Fact shows us this.

James Madison, the “Father of the U.S. Constitution”, along with many founders of this country, regardless of their religious or non-religious affiliations, knew keeping politics and religion separate not only preserves each, but helps them flourish:

“The number, the industry, and the morality of the Priesthood and the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the Church and the State.”

Gay and Lesbian Rights and Jewish Values

“The two most often cited Biblical texts concerning homosexuality are both found in the book of Leviticus, where they are in the context of a larger section directing sexual behavior. First, it is written: “Do not lie with a male as one lies with a woman; it is an abhorrence.” (Leviticus 18:22) The second citation is from Leviticus 20:13, where we read that “If a man lies with a male as one lies with a woman, the two of them have done an abhorrent thing; they shall be put to death-their blood guilt is upon them.”

However, we are also guided by the very basic belief that all human beings are created b’tselem Elohim (in the Divine image), as it says in Genesis 1:27, “And God created humans in God’s own image, in the image of God, God created them; male and female God created them.” Rabbi David Saperstein said in Congressional testimony in support of ENDA that “regardless of context, discrimination against any person arising from apathy, insensitivity, ignorance, fear, or hatred is inconsistent with this fundamental belief. We oppose discrimination against all individuals, including gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, for the stamp of the Divine is present in each and every one of us.”

Each of us, created in God’s image, has a unique talent, with which we can contribute to the high moral purpose of tikkun olam, the repair of our world. Excluding anyone from our community lessens our chance of achieving this goal of a more perfect world.”

For many years, the federal government has provided funding solely to ineffective abstinence-only sex education programs

March 31, 2011

Eliminate Abstinence-Only Sex Education

“Comprehensive sexuality education programs encourage abstinence but also recognize the realities of sexuality and behavior among teenagers. They address issues relating to contraception and safe sex, delay the onset of sexual activity, reduce the number of partners, and decrease the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy. Moreover, comprehensive sexuality education programs help students talk with parents about sex, build healthy relationships, and address issues of sexual and gender identity and orientation.  Unfortunately, for many years, the federal government has provided funding solely to ineffective abstinence-only sex education programs.

The first source of federal government funding for truly comprehensive sex education, the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP), was created in March 2010 by the new health care law. Unfortunately, the health care law also renewed $50 million for Title V, a source of government funding for abstinence-only sex education that President Obama had removed in his 2010 budget. The result was that for Fiscal Year 2010 (which ended on September 30), states were able to choose to apply for PREP funding, Title V funding, neither or both.

The Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act, proposes eliminating Title V abstinence-only sex education programs and transferring the money to PREP. This bill would eliminate the abstinence-only programs once and for all and ensure that young adults receive the comprehensive education they need to protect themselves if they choose to have sex.”

46% to 51% of U.S. adults read so poorly that they earn “significantly” below the threshold poverty level for an individual

March 31, 2011

National literacy should be improved, says educator: In the United Nations Development Program Report on the literacy rate of countries around the world, the United States and Great Britain are tied at number 21 with a 99 percent literacy rate.

Which Countries Set the Best Examples?: The United Nations produces an annual Human Development Report which includes the Human Development Index. The factors taken into account include life expectancy, adult literacy rate, schooling and Gross Domestic Product.

National Adult Literacy Survey: “46% to 51% of U.S. adults read so poorly that they earn “significantly” below the threshold poverty level for an individual.”

List of countries by literacy rate: US ranks #21

Literacy in North America: “Literacy has also been used as a way to sort populations and control who has access to power. Because literacy permits learning and communication that oral and sign language alone cannot, illiteracy has been enforced in some places as a way of preventing unrest or revolution. During the Civil War era in the United States, white citizens in many areas passed anti-literacy laws banning teaching slaves to read or write presumably understanding the power of literacy. In the years following the Civil War, the ability to read and write was used to determine whether one had the right to vote. This effectively served to prevent former slaves from joining the electorate and maintained the status quo.The literacy rate of Canada, being almost 99% in 2003, has declined, and will be under world’s average literacy rates for adults in the next two decades, depending on the rate of declining.”

PEPE ESCOBAR, Skype: pepeasia
Escobar’s books include Obama Does Globalistan. His recent writings for the Asia Times are at: atimes.com.

He recently wrote the piece “There’s no Business Like War Business,” which states: “Lies, hypocrisy and hidden agendas. This is what United States President Barack Obama did not dwell on [in his speech last night] when explaining his Libya doctrine to America and the world. … It’s easy to identify who profits from the war in Libya: The Pentagon, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the ‘rebels,’ the French and al-Qaeda. But that’s only a short list of profiteers; control of an ocean of fresh water is crucial to the war mix and nobody knows who’ll end up getting the oil and the natural gas. … United Nations Security Council resolution 1973 has worked like a Trojan horse, allowing the Anglo-French-American consortium — and NATO — to become the UN’s air force in its support of an armed uprising. Apart from having nothing to do with protecting civilians, this arrangement is absolutely illegal in terms of international law.”

He also wrote the piece “Endgame: Divide, Rule and Get the Oil,” which states: “Odyssey Dawn is only happening because the 22-member Arab League voted to impose a no-fly zone over Libya. The Arab League — routinely dismissed in Western capitals as irrelevant before this decision — is little else than an instrument of the House of Saud’s foreign policy. Its ‘decision’ was propelled by Washington’s promise to protect the GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council] kings/sheikhs/oligarchs from the democratic aspirations of their own subjects — who are yearning for the same democratic rights as their ‘cousins’ in eastern Libya.

“This is exactly the same GCC, posing for Saudi Arabia that invaded Bahrain to help the Sunni al-Khalifa dynasty to crush the pro-democracy movement. … For Saudi Arabia this was a great deal; the perfect chance for King Abdullah to get rid of Gaddafi (the bad blood between both since 2002 is legendary), and the perfect chance for the House of Saud to lend a hand to a bewildered Washington.” [Brazil is one of a few non-Arab countries granted observer status at the Arab League.]

Why You Should Take Bullying Seriously

March 31, 2011

Partners Against Hate.org:

Bullying is a pattern of activity intended to cause harm or distress to others. Bullies tend to target students who are the most vulnerable.

The Facts on Bullying

The fear of being bullied may keep as many as 160,000 students out of school on any given day. (National Association of School Psychologists)

Fifty-five percent of 8- to 11-year olds and 68 percent of 12- to 15-year-olds say bullying is a big problem. (Kaiser Family Foundation)

Nearly 30 percent of all youth aged 11 to 1 have been a victim or perpetrator of bullying. (Journal of the American Medical Association)

One in four children who bully will have a criminal record by the time they reach 30. (U.S. Department of Education)

Youth who bully others frequently behave badly in school. Bullies are also more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and get bad grades. (Journal of the American Medical Association)

Sixty percent of boys who were bullies in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by 24; 40 percent had three or more convictions. Bullies were four times as likely as their peers to have multiple convictions. (Olweus Bullying Prevention Group)

Boys more likely than girls to bully, but it is a problem for everybody. Girls are more likely to bully by excluding, while boys are more likely to engage in physical bullying. Both boys and girls engage in frequent verbal bullying. (Olweus Bullying Prevention Group)

(source: “Stop Bullying Now,” a collaboration between the National Association of Broadcasters and the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)

Take a Stand. Lend a Hand. Stop Bullying Now!
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched a multi-year National Bullying Prevention Campaign-”Take a Stand. Lend a Hand. Stop Bullying Now!”-to address this critical problem. The campaign’s goal is to actively engage 9-through 13-year-old youths-and those who shape their world-in a comprehensive, research-based effort to change the environment in which bullying occurs.

Everyone in the community – parents, teachers, school officials, students, and others – has a stake in putting a stop to bullying and a role to play in bullying prevention efforts. Visit www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov for more information.

Libya: Who Are the Rebels?

March 31, 2011

VIJAY PRASHAD

Author of The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World, Prashad said today:

“We should be very careful when we think of the rebels. We should not confuse all the rebellions across the Arab world and consider them all to be the same. There are some important differences. Also, the United States and NATO have their own agendas here. When one supports an intervention, one should be very careful to see whose intervention we are supporting. Is this on behalf of those young people, the workers and others? Or is it on behalf of NATO and the Libyans it may be attempting to install?

“So, for instance, when we talk about the rebel leadership in Benghazi, one should keep in mind that the two principal military leaders, one of whom was a former interior minister in the Gadafi regime, Abdel Fatah Younis. And the second, Khalifah Hifler, was a general who led Libyan troops in Chad in the 1980s and was then taken up with the Libyan National Salvation Front, went off to live in Vienna, Virginia, for 30 years, about a ten minute drive from Langley [where the CIA is headquartered], and returned to Benghazi to, in a sense, I think, hijack the rebellion on behalf of the forces of reaction. In addition to NATO members, it’s fundamentally Qatar and the UAE, the Saudis and the Gulf Cooperation Council that is behind this. That’s the principal Arab support for the Libyan intervention and is the same force putting down the uprising in Bahrain. You had the Saudi Prince Faisal Al Turki talking about the GCC becoming perhaps a NATO of the Gulf region. So part of this intervention is precisely to clamp down on the ‘Arab Spring,’ to take attention away, as well, from Bahrain and other places, rather than a part of the Arab Spring — exactly the opposite of what the U.S. administration is claiming.”

Presidential hopefuls want America to be governed by biblical law, Pope warns The Fires of Hell are Real and Eternal and more….

“Hell is a place where sinners really do burn in an everlasting fire, and not just a religious symbol designed to galvanise the faithful, the Pope has said. Addressing a parish gathering in a northern suburb of Rome, Benedict XVI said that in the modern world many people, including some believers, had forgotten that if they failed to “admit blame and promise to sin no more”, they risked “eternal damnation — the Inferno”.  Continue

Huckabee: All Americans Should Be Forced at Gunpoint to Listen to David Barton

“While most eyes were on the Conservative Principles Political Action Committee conference in Iowa on Saturday, many of us who follow the religious right were more interested in another conference, also held in Iowa, on Thursday and Friday. This other conference was the Rediscover God in America conference, where all the same potential 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls that appeared at the Saturday’s Conservative Principles PAC conference told us what they really think — that America should be governed by biblical law.

Sure, there was a lot of talk about important issues like the economy at the Conservative Principles PAC conference, but it was at the Rediscover God in America conference that we learned that all of our economic policies should be based on the Bible. And who did we learn this from? None other than Christian nationalist pseudo-historian David Barton, who kicked off the conference with a lengthy presentation of his usual historical hogwash. Then, one by one, as the potential Republican presidential candidates took the podium to let the audience full of pastors know just how Christian they are, each began by gushing about what a great historian and good friend David Barton is.”  Continue

Democracy and Minority Rights

All countries have minorities that differ in language, religion, ethnic origin or culture from the majority population. Attempts by governments to forcibly create a “uniform” nation have invariably led to discrimination and persecution; the most recent attempt resulted in what is now known as “ethnic cleansing” in former Yugoslavia. But intolerance is not only a threat to minorities.

The political and moral health of a society can be measured by its treatment of Jews, the historian Isaac Deutscher wrote. This holds true for the attitude toward all minorities. Not the imposition of majority opinions on society but tolerance and respect for minorities are the hallmarks of a democratic society. Democracy itself is threatened by indifference toward minority rights and political opportunism that exploits prejudices and ignorance in the population.

Minorities must be able to participate in society as equals while giving full expression to their own identity without fear. To accomplish this, minorities are dependent upon the majority – upon the awareness within the majority that it has a special responsibility in actively safeguarding minority rights. Some of these safeguards are:

  • an educational system that fosters awareness of and respect for different cultures or religions;
  • laws and a legal system that protect minority rights;
  • a public discourse in which opinion leaders from politics, cultural life and the media honor their special responsibility in upholding tolerance.

“Why should we attack the unbelievers in the Holy Land, and leave the infidels in our midst undisturbed ?”

March 30, 2011

The First Crusade

During the first 700 years of Christendom, Jewish communities in Europe are rarely placed in direct physical danger. But the situation changes when, in 1095, Pope Urbanus calls for a crusade to liberate Jerusalem from the hands of the Muslims.

On their way to Jerusalem, the crusaders leave a track of death and destruction behind in the Jewish communities along the Rhine and Danube. “Because,” as they exclaim, “why should we attack the unbelievers in the Holy Land, and leave the infidels in our midst undisturbed ?”

On May 25, 1096, about 800 Jews are murdered in Worms, Germany, while many others choose suicide. In Regensburg, the Jews are thrown into the Danube to be “baptized.” In Mainz, Cologne, Prague and many other cities, thousands of Jews are killed and their possessions plundered. During the following hundred years, new crusades are accompanied by massacres and pillage among the Jewish population.

With the crusades, the status of the Jews as second class citizens becomes entrenched in Church dogma and state laws throughout Christian Europe. A period of oppression and insecurity follows that ends only in the 18th century.

Religious young adults become obese by middle age

March 30, 2011

“Could it be the potato salad? Young adults who frequently attend religious activities are 50 percent more likely to become obese by middle age as young adults with no religious involvement, according to new Northwestern Medicine research. This is the first longitudinal study to examine the development of obesity in people with various degrees of religious involvement.

“We don’t know why frequent religious participation is associated with development of obesity, but the upshot is these findings highlight a group that could benefit from targeted efforts at obesity prevention,” said Matthew Feinstein, the study’s lead investigator and a fourth-year student at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “It’s possible that getting together once a week and associating good works and happiness with eating unhealthy foods could lead to the development of habits that are associated with greater body weight and obesity.”

Previous Northwestern Medicine research established a correlation between religious involvement and obesity in middle-age and older adults at a single point in time. By tracking participants’ weight gain over time, the new study makes it clear that normal weight younger adults with high religious involvement became obese, rather than obese adults becoming more religious.”

Tracking Our Downward Spiral: the Ways in Which America Still ‘Leads’ the World

By Richard Clark, March 26, 2011

According to Yes Magazine, amongst 20 of the world’s wealthiest countries, America now has:

  • the highest poverty rate, both generally and for children;
  • the greatest inequality of incomes;
  • the smallest amount of government spending (as a percentage of GDP) on social programs for the disadvantaged;
  • the lowest number of paid holidays, annual leave days and maternity leave days;
  • the lowest score on the UN’s index of material well-being of children;
  • the worst score on the UN’s gender inequality index;
  • the lowest social mobility (i.e. in America, more members of the lower and middle class remain stuck in that class than ever before);
  • the highest public and private expenditure on health care (as a portion of GDP), and yet accompanied by:
  • the highest infant mortality rate
  • the greatest prevalence of mental health problems
  • the highest obesity rate
  • the largest percentage of people going without health care due to cost
  • the greatest number of low birth weight children per capita
  • the greatest consumption of anti-depressants per capita
  • the shortest life expectancy at birth (except for Portugal);

Quacks & Quakes

SKEPTIC magazine

The great Sendai earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, generated not only huge coverage in all the media, but also brought all the crazies out of the woodwork (as any major earthquake or natural disaster does). I’ve discussed the geophysical and geological details in a separate post, but the storm of misinformation and myths flying around the media and internet was overwhelming. My email box was filled questions about these events, because I’ve been doing publicity for my new book Catastrophes: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Tornadoes, and other Earth-Shattering Disasters (Johns Hopkins University Press). There were not only the usual myths about earthquakes, but also an additional layer of apocalyptic speculation and “end of the world” prophecies, plus the crazies who believe the 2012 myth. Among those that got their 15 minutes of fame during the post-quake media blitz was a well-known crank, Jim Berkland, who got a full interview promoting his ideas on Fox News on March 17 (but on no other network).

This study on the Founders, Executive Power and Military Intervention (PDF) was published by the Pace Law Review on 01/01/2010.

During the long periods of peace in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the United States maintained a small standing army, mobilized additional personnel to fight the few wars declared by Congress, and then sent most of the men home when the war was won.

This pattern was established during the earliest days of the Republic and was driven by the Founders‟ ambivalent view of military power.

James Madison conceived of warfare as a kind of petri dish for the expansion of state power at the expense of the individual.

“Of all the enemies to public liberty,” he wrote in 1795, “war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other.” “No nation,” Madison continued, “could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.”

He was hardly alone. As one scholar explained, “[t]he vast majority of America‟s landowning aristocracy had an almost congenital distrust of standing armies, which their ancestors for generations had identified with despotism.

“…There are no “emergency war powers” in the Constitution. The Founders expected us to govern ourselves in time of war according to the same laws that apply in times of peace.”

The Founders’ wisdom
By Lt. Col. Paul L. Yingling
“….the Founders considered executive power to be both a necessary guardian and a potential danger to popular liberty. The Great Writ is the most important of all checks on executive power, for if the executive has the unchecked power to imprison its opponents, every other liberty is meaningless. The Founders also extended legislative oversight to the conduct of war itself. By vesting the power to declare war with Congress, the Founders ensured that America would choose its wars carefully.”

What Conservatives Really Want

March 30, 2011

February 19, 2011 by George Lakoff

The central issue in our political life is not being discussed. At stake is the moral basis of American democracy.

The individual issues are all too real: assaults on unions, public employees, women’s rights, immigrants, the environment, health care, voting rights, food safety, pensions, prenatal care, science, public broadcasting, and on and on.
Budget deficits are a ruse, as we’ve seen in Wisconsin, where the Governor turned a surplus into a deficit by providing corporate tax breaks, and then used the deficit as a ploy to break the unions, not just in Wisconsin, but seeking to be the first domino in a nationwide conservative movement.

Deficits can be addressed by raising revenue, plugging tax loopholes, putting people to work, and developing the economy long-term in all the ways the President has discussed. But deficits are not what really matters to conservatives.
Conservatives really want to change the basis of American life, to make America run according to the conservative moral worldview in all areas of life.

In the 2008 campaign, candidate Obama accurately described the basis of American democracy: Empathy — citizens caring for each other, both social and personal responsibility—acting on that care, and an ethic of excellence. From these, our freedoms and our way of life follow, as does the role of government: to protect and empower everyone equally. Protection includes safety, health, the environment, pensions and empowerment starts with education and infrastructure. No one can be free without these, and without a commitment to care and act on that care by one’s fellow citizens.

The conservative worldview rejects all of that.

“….the anger and hatred that foreigners have for the United States is rooted in morally bankrupt, deadly, and destructive foreign policies…”

March 30, 2011

“More and more people are finally recognizing that the anger and hatred that foreigners have for the United States is rooted in morally bankrupt, deadly, and destructive foreign policies — policies that have been enforced by America’s enormous standing military force.”

The Bill of Rights: Antipathy to Militarism

Jacob Hornberger is founder and president of The Future of Freedom Foundation.

This article was originally published in the September 2004 edition of Freedom Daily.

U.S. foreign policy

Are the ideas and principles of the Founding Fathers relevant today? They couldn’t be more relevant. Many decades ago, President Dwight Eisenhower warned us about the growing power of the military-industrial complex in American life. Unfortunately, the American people failed to heed his warning. The result has been an ever-growing military cancer that is bringing death, ruin, shame, and economic disaster to our nation — just as our Founding Fathers said it would.

More and more people are finally recognizing that the anger and hatred that foreigners have for the United States is rooted in morally bankrupt, deadly, and destructive foreign policies — policies that have been enforced by America’s enormous standing military force. The resulting blow-back in terms of terrorist attacks, such as those on the World Trade Center in 1993 and 2001, have been used as the excuse for waging more wars thousands of miles away, and those wars have produced even more anger and hatred, with the concomitant threat of even more terrorist counter-responses. All that, in turn, has provided the excuse for more foreign interventions, ever-increasing military budgets, consolidation of power, increasing taxes, and massive infringements on the civil liberties of the American people.

It is not a coincidence that the president’s indefinite detention and punishment of American citizens for suspected terrorist crimes without according them due process, habeas corpus, right to counsel, jury trials, freedom of speech, or other fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are being enforced by the standing army that our ancestors warned us against. And make no mistake about it: Given orders of their commander in chief, especially in a “national security crisis,” to establish “order” in America, U.S. soldiers will do the same thing that soldiers throughout history have done — they will obey the orders given to them. Just ask the survivors of the massacre at the Branch Davidian compound at Waco or the victims of rape and sex abuse at Abu Graib prison in Iraq or Jose Padilla, an American citizen who is currently in Pentagon custody, where he has been denied due process, habeas corpus, and other rights accorded by the U.S. Constitution.

In determining the future direction of our nation, the choice is clear: Do we continue down the road of empire, standing armies, foreign wars and occupations, and sanctions and embargoes, along with the taxes, regulations, and loss of liberty that inevitably come with them? Do we continue a foreign policy, enforced by the U.S. military, that engenders ever-increasing anger and hatred among the people of the world, which then engenders violent “blowback” against Americans, which is in turn used to justify more of the same policies?

Or do we change direction and move our nation in the direction of the vision of our Founding Fathers — toward liberty and the restoration of a republic to our nation — toward a society in which the government is limited to protecting the nation from invasion and barred from invading or attacking foreign nations — a world in which the United States is once again the model society for freedom, prosperity, peace, and harmony — a nation in which the Statue of Liberty once again becomes a shining beacon for those striving to escape the tyranny and oppression of their own governments?

Clean Air Under Attack: Call Your Senators NOW

March 30, 2011

Senate anti-EPA Amendments Scheduled for Wednesday

Legislation designed to prevent the EPA from safeguarding the air we breathe will face Senate votes tomorrow, according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Today on the Senate floor Reid stated, “I think we’re at a point where in the morning, we can vote on the McConnell amendment dealing with the EPA and a couple of other amendments relating to EPA to get rid of that issue one way or another.”

The McConnell amendment, introduced by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and authored by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) would block the Environmental Protection Agency from protecting our air from dirty polluters.

The other additional anti-EPA amendments include one proposed by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), which would hamper the EPA from safeguarding our air for two years, and another amendment proposed by Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), which would allow smaller polluters to continue poisoning the air we breathe.

TAKE ACTION:

Support The EPA’s New Air Pollution Rules – Submit a public comment to the EPA in support of their new rules to curb toxic air pollution.

It appears very likely that the U.S. Senate will vote tomorrow, Wednesday, on several amendments to block, weaken or delay the EPA’s ability to curb global warming pollution under the Clean Air Act.

LCV’s legislative staff have been meeting senators and their aides on Capitol Hill and it looks like these amendments could come down to just a handful of votes. We need to generate as many calls as possible to each and every senator.

Call script

Hi, my name is [name] and I live in [city], [state].

I’m calling to urge Senator [name] to oppose all amendments that block, weaken or delay the EPA’s ability to curb harmful carbon pollution under the Clean Air Act.

Corporate polluters and their allies in the Senate are trying to undermine the EPA’s ability to enforce clean air standards and protect public health. The threat of climate change is very real, and we cannot afford to delay action. That’s why the EPA must maintain the authority to set commonsense limits on carbon pollution. (1)

“Last year Big Oil and other corporate polluters spent a record $168 million lobbying Congress. They’ve launched an unprecedented smear campaign to defeat comprehensive climate legislation and protect their profits.

Making matters worse, a recent Supreme Court ruling opens the floodgates for oil companies like Exxon Mobil to tap their vast corporate profits to also influence the outcome of federal elections.

Obama Raises American Hypocrisy To A Higher Level & Obama’s Sickening Hypocrisy

Obama Raises American Hypocrisy To A Higher Level
Paul Craig Roberts, Tuesday March 29, 2011
What does the world think? Obama has been using air strikes and drones against civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and probably Somalia. In his March 28 speech, Obama justified his air strikes against Libya on the grounds that the embattled ruler, Gadhafi, was using air strikes to put down a rebellion. ” Continue: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article27783.htm

Obama’s Sickening Hypocrisy
John Perry. Tuesday March 29, 2011
“Pardon me, Mr. President, but is it not a betrayal of who we’re supposed to be when there is such a deafening silence in Washington regarding the well over one million innocent fellow human beings, in Iraq alone, who now lay dead as a result of the illegal wars of choice launched by your predecessor?” Continue: http://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/2011/03/29/john-perry-obamas-sickening-hypocrisy/

A sheep in wolf’s clothing?
William Bowle, March 28, 2011
“The BBC has gone to extreme lengths to try and prove that firstly, every last one of the Empire’s missiles, dozens of them raining down in Libya, have unlike all the other wars the Empire has going, actually found their intended targets. It’s bent over backward to please the empire endlessly churning out the message: ‘these are humanitarian bombs falling on Libyans’, whether civilian or armed. What a contradiction! Truly Orwellian in scale” Continue: http://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/2011/03/28/a-sheep-in-wolf’s-clothing-by-william-bowles/

Hitler Was a Christian The Holocaust was caused by Christian fundamentalism

March 29, 2011

“The anti-Semitism of the new movement [Christian Social movement] was based on religious ideas instead of racial knowledge.”

~ Adolf Hitler Mein Kampf

History is currently being distorted by the millions of Christians who lie to have us believe that the Holocaust was not a Christian deed.  Through subterfuge and concealment, many of today’s Church leaders and faithful Christians have camouflaged the Christianity of Adolf Hitler and have attempted to mark him an atheist, a pagan cult worshipper, or a false Christian in order to place his misdeeds on those with out Jesus.  However, from the earliest formation of the Nazi party and throughout the period of conquest and growth, Hitler expressed his Christian support to the German citizenry and soldiers. Those who would make Hitler an atheist should turn their eyes to history books before they address their pews and chat rooms.

Considering that Christianity has thus far been incapable of producing an unbiased, educated follower which speaks the truth, (I haven’t encountered any), I have been forced to dispel the myth by writing this essay.  It is not until I bring up his speeches, my personal info on the Nazi regime and their tactics that a Christian will begin to question what their clergy told them. (I am the offspring of a German soldier.  My Opa served under Hitler in WW2 and my father was raised during the time of the Nazi regime.  This is important information to take into consideration for I am privy to some info that most Americans do not know.  It is common for American media and education institutions to lie to their citizens concerning Nazi Germany.)  So, in presenting this information I must break it into four parts: 1) Facts about Hitler and his involvement with the Church.  2) How the Church was the catalyst for anti- Semitism.  3) Facts concerning how the Nazi regime drilled these beliefs into Germanic society.  4) Quotes Hitler made which prove he had a disdain for atheism/occultism, upheld his Christian faith, and hated Jews due to his Christianity.

Conservative Christian Judges In The Highest Court Of USA Show Their True Colors

Court: Exonerated inmate doesn’t get $14 million

AKA:

RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN US SUPREME COURT DENIES JUSTICE FOR MAN WRONGLY JAILED WHO WITH DEATH PENALTY SINCE 1985 JUST WEEKS FROM HIS DEATH

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Jesse J. Holland, Associated Press Tue Mar 29, 12:02 pm ET

WASHINGTON – An ideologically-divided Supreme Court overturned a $14 million judgment given to a former death row inmate who accused New Orleans prosecutors of withholding evidence in order to help convict him of murder.

The court’s five conservative-leaning justices, in their first ideological victory of the year, said the New Orleans district attorney’s office should not be punished for not providing specific training to young prosecutors on Brady rights, which dictate when to turn over evidence to a suspect’s lawyer that could prove their client’s innocence.

But in a rare oral dissent read directly from the bench, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said former District Attorney Harry Connick created “a tinderbox in which Brady violations were nigh inevitable” and that John Thompson deserved damages for “the gross, deliberately indifferent and long-continuing violation of his fair trial rights.”

Thompson, who at one point was only weeks away from being executed, successfully sued the district attorney’s office in New Orleans, arguing Connick showed deliberate indifference by not providing adequate training for assistant district attorneys.

Prosecutors did not turn over a crime lab report that indicated Thompson’s blood type did not match the perpetrator in an attempted robbery in 1985. Prosecutors used that conviction to get the death penalty in another case Thompson was involved in.

Prosecutors normally have immunity for their actions while working, but Thompson convinced a jury that the district attorney’s office had not trained its lawyers sufficiently on how to handle evidence. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans was split evenly on appeal, which upheld the lower court verdict.

Brady rights are named after the Supreme Court’s Brady v. Maryland case, which says prosecutors violate a defendant’s constitutional rights by not turning over evidence that could prove a person’s innocence.

Lawyers are expected to know the law when they graduate law school and pass the bar exam, and undergo professional on-the-job training and continuing education afterward, Justice Clarence Thomas said.

Slavery in the Bible

March 29, 2011

Evil Bible.com: Slavery

Except for murder, slavery has got to be one of the most immoral things a person can do.  Yet slavery is rampant throughout the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments.  The Bible clearly approves of slavery in many passages, and it goes so far as to tell how to obtain slaves, how hard you can beat them, and when you can have sex with the female slaves.

Many Jews and Christians will try to ignore the moral problems of slavery by saying that these slaves were actually servants or indentured servants.  Many translations of the Bible use the word “servant”, “bondservant”, or “manservant” instead of “slave” to make the Bible seem less immoral than it really is.  While many slaves may have worked as household servants, that doesn’t mean that they were not slaves who were bought, sold, and treated worse than livestock.

The following passage shows that slaves are clearly property to be bought and sold like livestock.

  • However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you.  You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land.  You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance.  You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way.  (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

The following passage describes how the Hebrew slaves are to be treated.

  • If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years.  Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom.  If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year.  But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him.  If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master.  But the slave may plainly declare, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children.  I would rather not go free.’  If he does this, his master must present him before God.  Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl.  After that, the slave will belong to his master forever.  (Exodus 21:2-6 NLT)

Notice how they can get a male Hebrew slave to become a permanent slave by keeping his wife and children hostage until he says he wants to become a permanent slave.  What kind of family values are these?

The following passage describes the sickening practice of sex slavery.  How can anyone think it is moral to sell your own daughter as a sex slave?

  • When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.  If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.  But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her.  And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter.  If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife.  If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.  (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

So these are the Bible family values!  A man can buy as many sex slaves as he wants as long as he feeds them, clothes them, and screws them!

What does the Bible say about beating slaves?  It says you can beat both male and female slaves with a rod so hard that as long as they don’t die right away you are cleared of any wrong doing.

  • When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished.  If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.  (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show.

  • Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear.  Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ.  (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)
  • Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed.  If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful.  You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts.  Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them.  (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)

In the following parable, Jesus clearly approves of beating slaves even if they didn’t know they were doing anything wrong.

  • The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it.  “But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly.  Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given.”  (Luke 12:47-48 NLT)

“Lighthouses are more useful than churches.” ~ President James Madison, 4th President of the US, one of the Founding Fathers and principal author of the US Constitution, often called the “Father of the Constitution”

March 29, 2011

(He must of known something…..)

Editor’s note: Henry Bornstein, a retired attorney who handled constitutional cases and studies the Constitution from a historical as well as legal perspective, uses letters in response to previous commentaries as a foil to help explain the place of religion in the U.S. Constitution. This is part 7

Source: http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20110207/EDITS/110209913/1021&ParentProfile=1065

=-=-=-=-=

Since the early 1980s (if not before) the actual words and the absence of words in the Constitution mean nothing to the Christian right.

“America’s original founding as a Christian state is central to the Christian rights’ conspiratorial theory of American history.” (Ibid p.22)

“Pat Robertson claimed that America was founded as a Christian nation and remained such until 20th century liberals and free thinkers replaced it with an ‘un-American secular state.’ He stated: ‘If Christian people work together, … they can succeed during this decade in winning back control of the institutions that have been taken from them over the past 70 years.’ Ralph Reed proclaimed … that ‘what Christians have got to do is take back this country’ and ‘make it a country once again governed by Christians.’ In 1984, at the Republican National Convention the Rev. W.A. Criswell stated in his benediction that ‘there is no such thing as separation of church and state. It is merely a figment of the imagination of infidels.’ The founder and president of the Rutherford Institute wrote that ‘it’s of little surprise then that … the entire Constitution was written to promote a Christian order.’ James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, wrote: ‘To read the Constitution as the charter for a secular state is to misread history. …The Constitution was designed to perpetuate a Christian order.’ Dobson also claimed, ‘This really was a Christian nation.’ ” (Ibid p.22-23)

The difference in the thinking of the pro-Christian advocates in the earlier period I describe is that they recognized historically and factually that the Constitution was a godless secular document and tried to change it by amendment into what they wanted it to be.

In order to change something that already exists, one has to first accept it as it is.

Today’s revisionists, as many recognized historians have described them, deny history, deny the law and deny the express words of the Constitution. Instead of trying to change it by amendment, they make create their own history and ignore the content of the Constitution in order to say that it states or “really means” something other that what it actually says.

An apple does not become a pear because Robertson or Criswell or Dobson or Barton or Limbaugh or the thousands of their followers decide to call it a pear or because they tell millions of people who listen to or read what they say that an apple is a pear.

Claiming that Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Adams, Franklin, Hamilton and Paine, etc., were fundamentalist Christians and that they wanted this to be a Christian nation and that the Constitution is a Christian document that comes from God’s or Jesus’s laws does not make it so.

Here are a very few examples of revisionist fabrications, where an apple is a pear.

Did President Washington really add to his Oath of Office the words: “So help me God”? The answer is no.

“There is absolutely no extant contemporary evidence that Washington altered the language of the oath as laid down in Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution: ‘I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.’ 65 years later, in his book, ‘The Republican Court,’ Rufus Griswold cited a childhood memory of Washington Irving as his source. It took another 27 years before the first clearly documented case of a President adding the words, ‘So help me God,’ was recorded — when Chester A. Arthur took the oath in 1881.” (Peter R. Henriques)

David Barton at least twice (P.120-fn.128 & P.155), in his “Myth of Separation” claims that Madison made the statement below. Mr. Barton’s lead in (on P.20) is: “With his intimate knowledge of the Constitution, he would surely know if there was an intent to separate Christianity from the Constitution or from government. Yet he (Madison) declared:”

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”

Many other religious revisionists such as Benjamin Hart in his book: “Faith and Freedom” (1988)(P.18), as did Rush Limbaugh in “See, I Told You So” (1993) (P.73), recite this imaginary quote.

Did Madison ever say this? The answer is no. No one has ever found this quote in any of Madison’s writings, nor has any real historian who has written a biography about Madison ever come across this quote.

Mr. Barton’s sources for this myth are Harold Lane and Fredrick Nyneyer, whomever they are. (I thank Gene Garman and his “Essays in Addition to America’s Real Religion” for much of this information.)

Again, I suggest that instead of reading this made up contrived history, read the Constitution and read what the authors actually said and read the applicable law concerning these issues.

The revisionists and those who think like they do are simply wrong.

As the revisionists claim, did Benjamin Franklin ever say: “Whosoever shall introduce into the public affairs the principles of primitive Christianity will change the face of the world.”

Barton uses this quote on P.151 of his book.

His source for this alleged quote is not from Franklin or any Franklin biographer or any recognized historian. It is from a book “The Light and the Glory.”

No one has ever found any evidence whatsoever that he said this.

But he did say each of the following:

n “Lighthouses are more useful than churches.”

n “I think vital religion has always suffered when orthodoxy is more regarded than virtue. The scriptures assure me that at the last day we shall not be examined on what we thought but what we did.” (Letter to his father, 1738).

n “My parents had early given me religious impressions, and brought me through my childhood piously in the dissenting (puritan) way. But I was scarce fifteen, when, after doubting by turns of several points, as I found them disputed in the different books I read, I began to doubt of Revelation itself. Some books against Deism fell into my hands. … It happened that they wrought an effect on me quite contrary to what was intended by them; for the arguments of the deists, which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much stronger than the refutations; in short, I soon became a thorough deist.” (Benjamin Franklin, “Autobiography,” p.66 as published in The American Tradition in Literature.)

n “The way to see by Faith is to shut the eye of Reason.” (Poor Richard, 1758.)

Free Speech for Really Rich Guys

March 29, 2011

The Supreme Court finds a cause worth fighting for.

By Dahlia LithwickPosted Monday, March 28, 2011, at 7:06 PM ET

There are probably only about 10 guys in America who are cheerfully unconcerned about the influence of multimillionaires on elections. One of them is Charles Koch. David Koch is another, as is Karl Rove. Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and the guy with the top hat on the board of the Monopoly game are two more. Luckily for them, the other five guys currently sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. And judging from this morning’s argument in McComish v. Bennett, there is no principle those five justices will fight harder to preserve than the right of the impossibly wealthy to purchase as much speech as they want and need to win a political campaign. Top Ten Signs You’re a Fundamentalist Christian

March 28, 2011

Top Ten Signs You’re a Fundamentalist Christian

http://www.evilbible.com/Top_Ten_List.htm

10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

9 – You feel insulted and “dehumanized” when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.

8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

7 – Your face turns purple when you hear of the “atrocities” attributed to Allah, but you don’t even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in “Exodus” and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in “Joshua” including women, children, and trees!

6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs — though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering.  And yet consider your religion the most “tolerant” and “loving.”
3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in “tongues” may be all the evidence you need to “prove” Christianity.

2 – You define 0.01% as a “high success rate” when it comes to answered prayers.  You consider that to be evidence that prayer works.  And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.

1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history – but still call yourself a Christian.

Moving Science to the Political Realm, Why Going to Church Can Make You Fat and more

Conservative ideology NEVER helped human kind. There is NO WHERE in history that anyone can point to, to prove me wrong. If conservative ideology would of been implemented many things would never have come to pass, for example, here are a few: 1) ending the tossing of Christians to the lions for entertainment; allowing woman to vote, wear pants and get an education; 2) most Americans would not be here is it were not for our immigrant grand and great grand parents that came here, a very non-conservative idea; 3) children would still be working slave labor in the USA, there would be no ’8 hour’ work day, bathroom breaks, 5 day work week, etc. Basically, anything taken for granted today was allowed because someone who was very non-conservative fought for it.

Putting a Stop to a Public School Preacher

After posting a lot about schools in which teacher-preachers aren’t really punished, it’s nice to hear about schools where incidents like these are put to rest immediately.

Reader Andrew shared this story with me via email. It takes place during his senior year of high school in 2002:

“I was taking two periods of band, one in the morning and one later in the day…

We had a sub in band that day. Usually that meant that we had an hour of freedom to do homework, but this guy stood up at the front of the classroom and started talking to the class about his life and work he did helping prison inmates while doing little magic tricks. Eventually it became clear that the “work” he did with inmates was preaching to them [and] he started doing the same in the band class.”

Moving Science to the Political Realm

“If we have abdicated our birthright to scientific progress, we have done so by moving the debate into the realm of political and cultural argument, where we all feel more confident, because it is there that the Gut rules. Held to the standards of that context, any scientific theory is turned into mere opinion…This is how there came to be a “debate” over the very existence of global warming, even though the considered view among those who have actually studied the phenomenon renders the debate quite silly.” ~ Charles Pierce, ‘Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free’

Why Going to Church Can Make You Fat

“Maybe it’s all the church socials, but a new study finds that those who attend religious activities are more likely to gain weight than those who don’t go to church as often. ,…, ….. research has also suggested that middle-aged adults who are more religious are more likely to be obese.”

NO WORRIES HERE….MOVE ALONG…Mass Dept of Public Health: Radio-active rainwater, likely associated with the Japan nuclear power plant event

March 28, 2011

-=-=-=0-0-0=-=-=-

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Sunday that very low concentrations of radioiodine-131, likely associated with the Japan nuclear power plant event, have been detected in a rainwater sample.

The DPH said the sample location is one of more than 100 locations around the country that are part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Radiation Network monitoring system that routinely monitors for radioactivity in environmental media.

DPH Commissioner John Auerbach emphasized that the sampling results showed no risk to state drinking water supplies.

“The drinking water supply in Massachusetts is unaffected by this short-term, slight elevation in radiation,” said DPH Commissioner John Auerbach. “However, we will carefully monitor the drinking water as we exercise an abundance of caution.”

‘In God We Trust’ On All Buildings; Taxes….Not For Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Bank of America, etc….

March 27, 2011

by Ken Layne
12:25 pm March 22, 2011

America’s Republican politicians hate the government and they especially hate government buildings such as public schools and firehouses and the U.S. Capitol, and the House GOP majority is dedicated to the slashing of every single government expenditure. And that’s why (?) the House will soon vote on a very important bill to make “In God We Trust” America’s official official motto, to “encourage the public display of the motto in all public buildings, public schools and government institutions.” See, “In God We Trust” was already turned into America’s “official motto” by anti-commie wingnuts in the House of Representatives way back in 1956 — a time when Washington’s wingnuts were fighting on all fronts, against black children trying to go to public schools and movie writers who believed in socialism and zombie comic books and black ladies having the nerve to want to sit down in whatever empty seat on the bus. Now, 55 years later, the intellectual descendants of institutional racism and commie hysteria want to affirm this moment of pandering to the far-right religious nuts.

Ohio Republicans pass new Jim Crow law disenfranchising 900,000 voters

By Bob Fitrakis

While Ohio public employees’ rights to bargain collectively are under siege, the Ohio Republican Party executed a perfect sleight of hand by disenfranchising nearly 900,000 Ohio voters. In the most vicious and direct attack on voting rights since Bull Connor ran amok in the deep South, Ohio House Republicans passed HB 159 that requires Ohio voters to produce one of four state photo IDs at the polls.

The only IDs that will be accepted in Ohio if this bill passes the overwhelming Republican State Senate are a U.S. passport, a U.S. military ID, an Ohio driver’s license, or an Ohio state ID. This is the most restrictive standard in the nation.

The Republican Party’s target is obvious. Studies indicate that 25% of African Americans nationwide do not have a government-issued photo ID, 18% of voters over age 65 do not have a photo ID, and 15% of voters with incomes under $35,000 lack the ID as well. Besides going after blacks, the elderly and the poor, the bill also sets its sights on college students. What do these people have in common? They tend to vote Democratic.

The Republicans refuse to discuss an amendment that would have accepted a college student ID with a photo from their own state-funded university, including The Ohio State University, one of the nation’s largest institutions of higher education.

Joe Miller’s Alaska Militia Friend Jailed For Trying To Murder Judges
by Ken Layne, March 16, 2011
Scruffy-cheeked Ivy League teabagger Joe Miller lost his crazed bid to become a senator last year, but the sore loser still thinks he’s got a place in politics. But will his ambitions survive his friendship with a 26-year-old white trash militia kid arrested for trying to kill a bunch of judges and cops? Who knows, this is Alaska! Anyway, this child militiaman — apparently the leader of the “Alaska Peacemakers Militia” — allegedly came up with a super-great way to deal with the f’in cops always breathin’ down his neck. It involved a whole lot of shooting and kidnapping and murder and then burning down a house full of other cops, or something. Alaska, everybody!

Tax Time? Not for Giant Corporations

By Bernie Sanders

While hard working Americans fill out their income tax returns this tax season, General Electric and other giant profitable corporations are avoiding U.S. taxes altogether. With Congress returning to Capitol Hill on Monday to debate steep spending cuts, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the wealthiest Americans and most profitable corporations must do their share to help bring down our record-breaking deficit.

Sanders renewed his call for shared sacrifice after it was reported that General Electric and other major corporations paid no U.S. taxes after posting huge profits. Sanders said it is grossly unfair for congressional Republicans to propose major cuts to Head Start, Pell Grants, the Social Security Administration, nutrition grants for pregnant low-income women and the Environmental Protection Agency while ignoring the reality that some of the most profitable corporations pay nothing or almost nothing in federal income taxes.

Sanders compiled a list of some of some of the 10 worst corporate income tax avoiders.

1) Exxon Mobil made $19 billion in profits in 2009.  Exxon not only paid no federal income taxes, it actually received a $156 million rebate from the IRS, according to its SEC filings.

2) Bank of America received a $1.9 billion tax refund from the IRS last year, although it made $4.4 billion in profits and received a bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department of nearly $1 trillion.

3) Over the past five years, while General Electric made $26 billion in profits in the United States, it received a $4.1 billion refund from the IRS.

4) Chevron received a $19 million refund from the IRS last year after it made $10 billion in profits in 2009.

5) Boeing, which received a $30 billion contract from the Pentagon to build 179 airborne tankers, got a $124 million refund from the IRS last year.

6) Valero Energy, the 25th largest company in America with $68 billion in sales last year received a $157 million tax refund check from the IRS and, over the past three years, it received a $134 million tax break from the oil and gas manufacturing tax deduction.

7) Goldman Sachs in 2008 only paid 1.1 percent of its income in taxes even though it earned a profit of $2.3 billion and received an almost $800 billion from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury Department.

8)  Citigroup last year made more than $4 billion in profits but paid no federal income taxes. It received a $2.5 trillion bailout from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury.

9) ConocoPhillips, the fifth largest oil company in the United States, made $16 billion in profits from 2007 through 2009, but received $451 million in tax breaks through the oil and gas manufacturing deduction.

10) Over the past five years, Carnival Cruise Lines made more than $11 billion in profits, but its federal income tax rate during those years was just 1.1 percent.

Sanders has called for closing corporate tax loopholes and eliminating tax breaks for oil and gas companies. He also introduced legislation to impose a 5.4 percent surtax on millionaires that would yield up to $50 billion a year. The senator has said that spending cuts must be paired with new revenue so the federal budget is not balanced solely on the backs of working families.

Top Bush-era GITMO and Abu Ghraib psychologist is WH’s newest appointment
By Glenn Greenwald, Mar 25, 2011

One of the most intense scandals the field of psychology has faced over the last decade is the involvement of several of its members in enabling Bush’s worldwide torture regime. Numerous health professionals worked for the U.S. government to help understand how best to mentally degrade and break down detainees. At the center of that controversy was — and is — Dr. Larry James. James, a retired Army colonel, was the Chief Psychologist at Guantanamo in 2003, at the height of the abuses at that camp, and then served in the same position at Abu Ghraib during 2004.Today, Dr. James circulated an excited email announcing, “with great pride,” that he has now been selected to serve on the “White House Task Force entitled Enhancing the Psychological Well-Being of The Military Family.”  In his new position, he will be meeting at the White House with Michelle Obama and other White House officials on Tuesday.

“We the corporations”

http://MoveToAmend.org/

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to:

* Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

* Guarantee the right to vote and to participate, and to have our vote and participation count.

* Protect local communities, their economies, and democracies against illegitimate “preemption” actions by global, national, and state governments.

The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule. We Move to Amend.

What’s really driving the GOP’s abortion war

By Amanda Marcotte, Mar 27, 2011

When Republicans profited from the miserable economy to sweep up huge wins in last fall’s election, most political watchers figured they knew what was coming: budget cuts, privatization of more government functions, and tax cuts for the wealthy. The push to dismantle public sector unions has been a bit of a surprise, but not a jarring one.

But what seems to have thrown everyone — save for a handful of embittered and neglected pro-choice activists — for a loop is the way Republican lawmakers at both the national and state levels have focused so intently on the uteruses of America. Republicans appear to believe that the women of America have wildly mismanaged these uteruses in the four decades since the Supreme Court gave them control over them — and now that Republicans have even a little bit of power, they’re going to bring this reign of female tyranny over uteruses to an end.

After all, the Republican House speaker, John Boehner, has identified limiting women’s access to abortion and contraception as a “top priority” — this with the economy is in tatters and the world in turmoil. Boehner’s and the GOP’s abortion fixation raises an obvious question: Why now, when there are so many other pressing issues at stake?

Pastor fired for not believing in hell

The pastor of a rural United Methodist church was fired from his job after voicing his doubts that sinners live an eternity of torment.

Reverend Chad Holtz was dismissed from Marrow’s Chapel in Henderson, North Carolina, when he posted a note on his Facebook page supporting a book written by prominent young evangelical pastor Rob Bell.

Welcome to the “Christian Nation”

The “Christian Nation” folks, led by David Barton and Phyllis Schlafley among others, are once again in full stride with the GOP takeover of the House of Representatives plus a number of State Houses and state governorships.  You know the drill.  They claim that the “Founding Fathers” were really “Christians” who wanted to set up a “Christian Nation,” that the intent to do so can be found in the Declaration of Independence and, if you read it really, really carefully, the Constitution, and anyway, it would be a really good idea.

Our side usually responds by, for example, pointing out one or more of the following.  Most of the Founding Fathers were deists if not outright atheists.  The word “god” does appear once in the Declaration, but the key word in the central “endowment” clause is “creator,” not “God.”  As a humanist, I interpret “creator” to mean the natural laws of physics, chemistry, and biology which have created all that is in the total universe.  Of course even the word “god” does not specify the Christian one.  It could be the Jewish one, the Muslim one (and both of those religions claim to worship the “one true god”), or Zeus or Ra for all we know.

The Dark Side of “Comprehensive Soldier Fitness”

By Roy Eidelson, Marc Pilisuk, and Stephen Soldz  Posted by Stephen Soldz

Why is the world’s largest organization of psychologists so aggressively promoting a new, massive, and untested military program? The APA’s enthusiasm for mandatory “resilience training” for all U.S. soldiers is troubling on many counts.

The January 2011 issue of the American Psychologist, the American Psychological Association’s (APA) flagship journal, is devoted entirely to 13 articles that detail and celebrate the virtues of a new U.S. Army-APA collaboration. Built around positive psychology and with key contributions from former APA president Martin Seligman and his colleagues, Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) is a $125 million resilience training initiative designed to reduce and prevent the adverse psychological consequences of combat for our soldiers and veterans. While these are undoubtedly worthy aspirations, the special issue is nevertheless troubling in several important respects: the authors of the articles, all of whom are involved in the CSF program, offer very little discussion of conceptual and ethical considerations; the special issue does not provide a forum for any independent critical or cautionary voices whatsoever; and through this format, the APA itself has adopted a jingoistic cheerleading stance toward a research project about which many crucial questions should be posed. We discuss these and related concerns below.

National debate continues over Bible education in public schools

“Many of us who object to this class would have no problem if the district had implemented a religious studies class instead of a class solely on the Bible,” Greathouse said.

“Aside from that fact that a class on the Bible in public school treads dangerously close to violating the separation of church and state, I would argue that on a practical level, the college level is more appropriate for the kind of critical thinking needed when studying religion.”

The Global Elite: Who are they?

Prior to the founding of the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) was the most significant body of global-minded elitists in the United States. As far back as 1959, the CFR was explicit about a need for world government:

“The U.S. must strive to build a new international order… including states labeling themselves as ‘socialist’… to maintain and gradually increase the authority of the United Nations.”
